4 Types of Features

SaaS features come in 4 flavors.

Here's how to understand them (and where to use them):

1. Technical Features

  • When people say "Stop talking about features! nobody cares about features!" they usually mean these.
  • Use in wikis, documentation, guides, etc.

2. Product features

  • These are literally what make up your product. You NEED to talk about these to explain what the product actually is.
  • Use these everywhere—ads, content, the website, etc.

3. UX features

  • as you interact with product features, what is the experience like? (a great experience—as with Slack—is a feature of the app).
  • Also, feel free to talk about these everywhere.

4. Credibility features

  • It's a selling feature to be validated by an external third party (especially A-list companies).
  • Use these in high importance channels (homepage, sales decks, etc.).

As you move up each level, you'll notice the features go from concrete to abstract

This "leveling" matches what each type of persona cares about:

  1. Integrators
  2. They want to know your app will work with their existing systems.
  3. Show them the nuts and bolts.

  1. End users
  2. They want to know what the product is and how it'll feel to use.
  3. Show them the product and talk about the UX.

  1. Decision-makers
  2. They want to know you'll still be in business in 2 years.
  3. Show them you're credible.

"The database has been truly invaluable to me as I build out my product marketing messaging for pre-selling a landing page for the SaaS app I'm building. Thank you so much for making this knowledge accessible for early-stage founders!"
