Market segmentation isn’t usually on founders minds in the beginning.
And here's why...
The classic co-founding team is made up of a builder and a seller.
🏗️ The Builder
→ passionate about creating something new
→ spends their time coding the software, engineering the hardware, etc.
👩‍💼 The Seller
→ passionate about bringing this tech to the world
→ spends their time evangelizing the product to potential customers and investors
What is missing?
The marketer 🎯
There's always a discussion:
"When should we hire our first marketer?"
❌ THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN A COFOUNDER.
And the problems don't stop there...
has pointed out (and Emily, please let me know if I’m remembering this stat wrong) that less than 1% of VCs have a marketing background.
Which means that companies are being built (and funded) without anyone thinking at the market SEGMENT level.
And the way you go from the garage to an IPO is by ruthlessly tackling SEGMENTS... not MARKETS.
