When to Position Your Startup

Your startup is probably too early to do positioning.

Here’s five questions you need to be able to answer before trying to position your product:

You must be able to say “yes” to in order to advance to the next question.

  1. Do you have any customers?
  2. Are these customers in a variety of segments?
  3. Are you able to identify a best-fit customer segment & persona?
  4. Are you willing to commit to having your homepage messaging speak ONLY to them for the next 6 months?
  5. Are you willing to devote 80% of your go-to-market efforts to reaching that single segment for the next 6 months?

If you answered no to any of these questions, most likely you aren’t quite ready to position your product.

You’re still in experimentation mode (which is totally fine!)

Keep hustling and getting leads wherever you can find them.

Once you get enough data, you can begin to make the transition from leads to accounts — and the positioning fun can begin.

"The database has been truly invaluable to me as I build out my product marketing messaging for pre-selling a landing page for the SaaS app I'm building. Thank you so much for making this knowledge accessible for early-stage founders!"
